How to promote your blog, spread positivity, and practice altruism

Recently I’ve developed a practice for after I publish a post on WordPress.

It’s basically this: I like to take about 15 minutes and read other posts related to the tags I chose for mine. I aim to like 5-10 posts and leave about 3 comments.

I’ve found a number of benefits to doing this:

  1. It promotes your blog! Being active in the writing community and engaging with other users can be a great way to promote your blog and drive in some new traffic. I would suggest leaving a thoughtful comment and having a unique profile picture so that people can recognize you for added differentiation.
  2. You spread positivity. Well, depending on what you say. But it’s very easy to do and it benefits everyone. Spreading positive messages is just an overall good thing to do. And I’m not going to lie to you, I enjoy doing it! It makes me feel good when I make other people feel good. Is that selfish? Maybe a little? But who cares! It’s a net positive and generally a win-win.
  3. You practice altruism. You donate a bit of your time to help motivate people. The reality of it is, the majority of posts that I like and comments I leave will have no direct benefit to me. They will largely go unnoticed and you can make the case that I’m wasting my time. While I agree it isn’t the most efficient use of time, I’m okay with that. I still think it’s a good thing to do.

Why I started doing this.

I started my blog about 2 months ago. Like most people, when I first started, I had no engagement and understandably so. I was brand new and had no audience or followers. But I challenged myself to post every day for 30 days and this helped motivate me. I always wanted to try blogging and 30 day challenges are the perfect length to test drive a habit in my experience.

Well, after my 8th or 9th post of absolutely zero engagement, I got my first like! It’s funny how happy I was to finally have someone engage with a post. Whether they read it or not, who knows. But it certainly felt like progress to me. I’m sure a lot of us have felt this. It gave me a boost of encouragement and I just really appreciated it.

As a side note, I’m pretty sure that very first like was from Bogdan, author and curator of the blog Pointless Overthinking found here. So shoutout to Bogdan for giving me that very first bit of encouragement – thank you! Although it was just a simple like, it meant a lot to me. Which is in part why I’ve tried paying it forward.

I started my blog because I wanted to practice writing, to help people, and to challenge myself. Although I’m not a great writer just yet, trying to be active in the community has been a great way for me to get started on the helping aspect, if only in a small way. Hopefully my encouragement can benefit someone who might appreciate that little boost and help them to achieve their goals.

So today I challenge you to to like a few extra posts and leave some extra comments! Have a great day!

  1. Good article! Blogging is a great way to share thoughts and information, inspire and motivate, and connect with others. At times I have given it up because I didn’t feel I had time to maintain a blog. But I do enjoy it and will continue at my own pace. Happy blogging 😊

  2. Those are great tips Evan. And one people find the theme in your writing, they become attached to it. I really enjoy your positive messaging. Thank you for always spreading good energy.

    1. In the top left of WordPress there’s a button that says “Reader”. I click on that, then I click on whatever tag I’m interested in (generally something related to what I’ve recently written).

  3. Evan , I can certainly relate to getting excited about getting my first like … one that wasn’t a family member or friend. I enjoy blogging and have been doing it for quite a while with some big gaps between posts at times though. I always do try to keep things positive and enjoy sharing what I have been doing. I will admit that at this point in time, it is a bit of a challenge. I found that by writing my last couple of blog posts, it actually boosted my own spirits because it made me search and think of positive things to write. Because nobody needs a “Debbie Downer” now for sure.

    1. Hi Ginny! I’m glad you could relate. At the end of the day, most of us are doing this for fun, so I say write whatever you find to be fun or interesting!

As a side note, I was able to relate to the title of your piece which is how I ended up reading it in the first place. Thanks for the comment and the feedback! 🙂

  4. Great post, Evan! I can totally relate to the excitement of people liking our first post. I’m right there now.
I’m glad I came across your writing, it has inspired me to continue trying, even if only for the sake of improving my skills. 😊
    All the best!

  5. Hey, I love this post! I’m new to this blogging thing and I love it, but get very little engagement! I’m doing the same as you did, challenging myself to do it every day for 1 month! Hope it works! Thank you for being open and honest with your platform!

    1. Hey Cuppa!

It’s fun, isn’t it?! The one post a day worked great for me personally to just force myself to publish some not so perfect pieces. These days I aim for about 2 per week. I think (hope) this helps them to be a bit higher quality, but it’s all just experimentation!

I’ve found that the best way to get engagement is to give it. Liking posts can definitely help, but I think the real secret is leaving thoughtful and relevant comments about their post. In other words, you’re doing just great! 😀

Thanks for the kind words and good luck with your challenge!
