It’s no secret that there are all sorts of great reasons to write. But here are my top five most compelling reasons in no particular order.
It helps clarify our thoughts.
Writing forces you to articulate your thoughts into clear ideas. It’s very easy to take for granted how abstract what’s going on between our ears can be. We think in a strange mixture of thoughts, ideas, words, and feelings and it takes energy and concentration to put these into coherent sentences. Writing is the perfect medium to practice doing this. The ability to think clearly is a valuable skill to have and writing is the perfect way to sharper it.
This point piggy-backs off of my first point. Again, there’s a clarification process, but this time it’s focused internally instead of externally. Writing helps us clarify our feelings and emotions. When we give ourselves permission to be honest and just write whatever comes to mind, we can find things we didn’t know we were looking for. It’s no substitute for a therapist, but its therapeutic value shouldn’t be underestimated.
Writing can be valuable for your career.
Another reason to learn to write is the advantages it can give you in the professional world. If you’re applying for a job that requires some writing, and you have a solid understanding of how to write, that can be a differentiating factor between you and a similar candidate gunning for the same spot. It can open doors and even entire buildings otherwise accessible.
Find gaps in your knowledge or understanding.
Do you think that you’re an expert in something? Can you explain to someone exactly how to do it from the first step to the last? Can you teach them how to do it? If you’re not sure, test yourself by trying to explain it through writing. Writing can help you find and address any blind spots that you may have.
Writing forces you to slow down.
It can often be hard to find time to slow down in our fast-paced world. But writing forces us to do just that. Slow down think about the details. There is a difference between knowing and understanding and writing helps us to understand.
Writing is a limitless resource and an incredible tool. It can be used alone or to enhance other tools. It can be incredibly powerful.
But at the end of the day, they’re just words on a page. Maybe they mean something. Maybe they don’t. Maybe writing can open up all sorts of opportunities that you could have never dreamed of. Or maybe it’s simply a hobby.
Writing can be whatever you make of it. That’s what’s so special about it. Personally, it’s the most beneficial when I remember not to take it too seriously.
If you don’t currently write, now is the perfect time to start! Starting a blog on WordPress is free! No excuses. I challenge you to post something!
