Greatness demands suffering. We see people achieve incredible feats, such as running an ultra marathon (100+ miles) or a publishing a scientific breakthrough. We may think that person is just extremely gifted or a genius. That very well could be the case. But it’s still only one piece of the equation.
The other, more important piece, is hard work.
It’s consistent practice. Regular experimentation. Repeated shortcomings.
It’s pushing yourself to your limits. Getting knocked down and having the mental resilience to get back up and keep going.
We see these incredible achievements in all their glory. But we see them in isolation, so we don’t get a complete understanding. This is the stuff we don’t see. The suffering. The sacrifices. The thousands of hours spent practicing. The countless failures. The roller coaster of emotions. The monotonous grind that accompanies any journey. And of course, the self doubt.

Learn to embrace suffering. Know that you’re not doing it for fun. You’re doing it because you know that on the other side of suffering stands greatness. Build your mental fortitude. Be disciplined and don’t give up. Start doing things that suck every single day of your life. Start small. Push yourself just a little bit further than you’re comfortable with every day.
